Today I came face to face with Archbishop Oscar Romero. I saw his humble home, struggles to help the poor and oppressed. His sacrifices in worldly comforts and the ultimate sacrifice his life.We visit the Chapel where he was serving communion when he was assassinated with one bullet from a sniper. I feel the passion of the Salvadorians as they prepare for the 30th anniversary of his Palm Sunday burial. Churches and streets hang with banners honoring him. Museums have exhibits remembering his works. Oscar Romero`s faith and dedication has given hope to powerless. I am proud that the neighborhood Getsemani is being rebuilt in Archbishop Romero`s honor with Habitat for Humanity. HFH also gives hope and dignity to the pushed aside and discouraged. Every human deserves respect and a chance to live a fulfilled and safe life. We also visited Miguel Angel Ramirez, a painter with hope for El Salvador. He teaches local children to express themselves through art and opens his home and studio to artists from around the world who would like to contribute.. His peaceful garden and open heart were the perfect ending to our day. Kelly Backman |
