As stated in our call to outreach, Glorifying Christ is a primary goal for Myers Park Presbyterian. For us, that manifests itself through service to others. We actually have an entire initiative called Every Member has a Ministry to help you discern God’s purpose for your life not as a volunteer, but as a disciple of Christ. Think of it as an internship in ministry with Christ as your teacher and the world as your classroom.
Each member of our brigade was called to this trip for their own, often different reasons. Many of us have heard stories of mission trips providing more benefit to those that go to help than those that we deemed needy. In preparation for this trip we have studied, prayed, and shared thoughts and feelings through fellowship.
We have learned of the biblical foundation for mission through studies with Dr. Tim Carriker, a veteran of 30 years of mission work in Brazil. Reading "Before You Pack Your Bags, Prepare Your Heart", we are learning to serve in a God-honoring way by going as a humble servant with cultural sensitivity and a readiness to be a team player.
Finally, we are working on our travel arrangements, vaccinations, elementary Spanish lessons, clothes packing, and all the other interesting things that need to be taken care of before we begin our journey in another month. Fortunately, the fellowship of the group allows us to prepare together. Our journey has really already begun.
